Light Across the Water

Light

Steadfast

Centered

Calm

A portal

A golden path

A swath cut across

Darkening salt marshes

Casting striking shadows

The Grecian pose of an egret

Bobbing heads of sea turtles

Up from green water like

Tiny dinosaurs in primordial swamps

The curving headland like

The profile of a silhouetted face

The sound of chattering voices

Returning whale watchers

From decks of pleasure boats cruise by

I wish I could walk upon the waters

Into that welcoming light

I do not know why so much time was spent

Rooted to the dark shore

I know now I can make it across

Without sinking

Buoyed by the light

I know now there is hope and promise

Solace and serenity

On the other side
