June’s approach to fashion was non-chantlant at best. Her appearance was rumbled looking, an after thought, always loose fitting. She predominately wore baggy, faded jeans and Indian style tunics and caftan belts. She looked like a throw back from the 60’s. She reminded Lilly of Janis Joplin. She sported long, straggling, salt and pepper hair, parted in the middle.
June did like to adorn herself with jewelry and trinkets. She favored chunky necklaces of semi-precious stones : amber, amethyst, rose quartz. Her frame was short and squat, her face was oval and mouth wide and teeth rather large. Her eyes were soft and round, a limpid pale-blue, almost translucent.
Her two children were begotten by two different men she hooked up with on her travels. Selene’s faterher was a Latin migrant worker, Raphael, who she met on an organic lettuce farm in the Salinas Valley in California. Selene resembled him : deep, swarthy skin, magoghany brown eyes and chestnut brown hair. She was well endowed physically for a girl of 15, that Lilly thought would led to nothing but trouble. Lilly, too, was physically well developed at her age and it was nearly her underdoing.
When Lilly was a teenager, she slept around. Her father’s abuse made her feel like nothing but an object of men’s sexual desire. She derived no pleasure from her sexual forays, just further alienation from her peers.
Calisto her other daughter was freckled, fair and strawberry blonde. Her face was heart-shape with small pursed, doll-like lips. She was petite like her mother, but lacked her sturdy bones. Her bone structure was more delicate and fragile looking. Her father was Ted. Ted was a wanderer, an iternant, like June. He, too, worked odd jobs. His biggest claim to fame was working as a roadie for the Grateful Dead. It was during that phase that June encountered him. After Jerry Garcia died of a drug overdose and the band folded, he and June went to Oregon to live on a commune/organic farm wherein Calisto was conceived and born. From an early age, Calisto, developed a fondness for the farm animals, tending to the baby lambs, goats, chicken, ducks and geese.
June described Ted as rather wild looking. He kept a poorly groomed goatee and a tousled, tangled mane of bright red hair. He, too, had blue eyes which were closer to aquamarine or greenish in shading.
He was a doting father and loved both Selene and Calisto equally, even he was not Selene’s biological fatherr. He had a poet’s heart but little common sense. He was very guillable and sold weed to one too many of the wrong persons. He was busted. For a time, June corresponded with him in prision for she truly cared for Ted
June’s apartment abounded with greenery : maidenhair ferns on the window sills, cascading hanging baskets of spider plants, red-veined coleus and potted africian violet plants. Interpersed with the houseplants were containers of home-grown marijuana. Given June’s green thumb, her stuff was of the highest quality. She practiced only organic cultivation – techniques learned from years spent on an organic farming out west.
June was a throwback to the 60’s out of place in the grunge world of the 1990’s. She wore her dirty blonde hair in long, tumbling wavelets, parted in the middle rather now descript – ala Janis Joplin. She wore dye-tied t-shirts and dashiki and paisley patterned tunics and blouses and loose, baggy fringed jeans and Brinkenstock sandles.
